Artist Statement
I value discovery above all in my work. My practice is a confrontation with the unknown, energized by the surprises and accidents inherent to abstract drawing.
This deep engagement with process began with ink and has expanded to encompass many drawing materials. I generate a vocabulary of forms through improvised, rapid drawing sessions. These source drawings are my building blocks; some stand alone, while others are collaged, sequenced, or reworked into larger compositions. I am fascinated by how forms evolve through this process, transforming as they are redrawn and recombined over time—whether in a single session or across many.
My mark-making embraces a clumsy, crude, and deliberately unnuanced gesture. These raw interventions alter and interfere with the entire drawing, disrupting its balance before a new equilibrium is found. I am drawn to the very point where materials interact with the paper, and I relish the challenge of discovering a work's potential within the confines of its support. This often leads to the physical building up of the drawing itself through the addition and subtraction of paper.
Ultimately, my work is about the conversation between drawings. I am interested in how they exist together in space, and the rhythmic way they play off one another to create a larger, cognitive landscape.
